Beauty

A study I painted of Zhaoming Wu's Other Side of Beauty. I love the way he lays on his paint to catch the atmosphere of light on his subjects. For my attempt, I used Gamblin & WN oils on a much used 11x14" Claessens canvas.

Oil Studies

A few studies that I painted from works by Zhaoming Wu, C. M. Dudash, Tong Luo and Huihan Liu. All such great painters!

Oil Sketches

Allowed myself only a limited amount of time to paint each portrait. Lots of fun because you don't have time to fret over the details; just paint what you see and be quick to mix your colors!

Digital Art

Having some fun with the digital sculpting program, Sculptris. My 5 year old loves the program and he picked it up pretty fast. See his 'little alien' piece below. Mine is the alien head. For me, this program has great potential for creating reference props.

Preserved was done in painter using the 'artist oil paint' tool.

Portrait Studies

In preparation for a project that I'm starting in the new year, I decided to study a couple of pieces of Z.S. Liang's work to practice darker skin tones -took a lot of liberties from the original references. Liang's color choices and brushwork are so inspiring  unfortunately I have yet to see any of his paintings in person. WN and Gamblin Oils on Claessens #13 canvas.

Old Fisherman

A study I painted using a limited palette (Venetian Red, Yellow Ochre Pale, Prussian Blue, Raw Umber and White). I had never used Prussian Blue before and it was difficult for me at first, but I kept telling myself that "this is only an experiment" so I kept pushing through. The painting ended up very muted but I like the effect. For reference I used a painting that I found on the internet but I don't know the artist -I deviated from the original quite a bit, even changing the eyes so they are now looking at the viewer.

Lynn

Oil on 30x20"canvas

The photo I took of this painting didn't turn out well. The varnished black background caught a lot of reflective light, so I used photoshop to come as close as possible to the actual painting. I still didn't do justice to the variations in colors of the wardrobe. The reference I used is a great photo by Peter Koevari. The elegant shape of the red on black immediately caught my eye and I knew it would be fun to paint. The background is pure Ivory Black and the costume is mix of cad red, alizirin and a touch of ivory black. (WN and Gamblin oils/Claessens #13 canvas)

Happy Father's Day!

I got this gift from my 3 year old this morning. He painted the picture on a ceramic heart. It is the coolest thing ever!! He was proud to give it to me, and I was proud to get it.

Portrait Sketches

Just finished a term of Portrait Oil Painting at Watts Atelier taught by Meadow Gist. Three hours per model, then 'brushes down' -fun class, one of my favorites.
